Hill End has been offering unique outdoor learning experiences since the 1920s.
We are a multi-use site, providing a diverse range of outdoor activities and facilities to schools and organised groups. These include quality outdoor educational sessions for all ages, self-catering residential buildings, meeting and classroom spaces, camping, teacher and adult training, alternative education provision, volunteering opportunities and family events.
Superbly located just four miles from the ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford, our 67 acres of tranquil and beautiful surroundings are a world away from urban life. A visit to Hill End offers visitors the opportunity to be closer to nature, with the space and time to explore and appreciate the wonders of the natural environment.
In 2020 we celebrated 100 years of outdoor education, dating to when the philanthropic ffennell family purchased the Wytham estate in 1920 (although many events were postponed to our ‘Hill End 101’ in 2021 due to the pandemic!). You can read more about our rich history here. This gives a truly special aspect to Hill End’s story and has been kept alive with memories from visitors old and new.
Our Vision is to build on the rich heritage of the centre by providing a unique space and opportunities for high-quality and inspirational outdoor learning to a diverse range of young people.
We invite you to take a look at what we offer and welcome you to contact us with any queries.
You can see and hear more about Hill End and our ethos in this short film from the University of Oxford’s Oxplore team – Is school the best place to learn? Or can the forest be a classroom too?
Please note that we hire our facilities to schools, companies and organised groups. We do not currently hire to private individuals for parties or accommodation. There is no public access to Hill End except for organised events. See our events pages for our latest programme.
